It will be a Diwali of LEDs this year in Hyderabad

As many as 4.53 lakh street lights in GHMC limits will be replaced by less power consuming LEDs by Diwali.

HYDERABAD: As many as 4.53 lakh street lights in GHMC limits will be replaced by less power consuming LEDs by Diwali. As part of this project that started this July, one lakh LEDs have been fitted in various parts of the twin cities till Sunday and the remaining 3.53 lakh are in the process of installation. The project, which is being implemented in coordination with central agency Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), is estimated to cost Rs.217.12 crores.

EESL will maintain LEDs up to seven years and capital investment will be paid from savings in the power bill. The existing street lights comprising halogen lamps, HPSV and HPMV light fittings consume a lot of energy and are worn out in less than a year, whereas the energy-efficient LEDs can function for over two years without any trouble.

GHMC officials said that presently, the 4.53 lakh street lights consume 2 crore power units per month, generating a bill of Rs 209 crore per year for corporation. After installing the LEDs, the assured minimum savings on enery load will be 55 per cent per annum, which means GHMC will save Rs 105-110 crore per annum. The glowing capacity of the newly-installed LEDs will be 98 per cent as per National Lighting Code, said officials. GHMC is replacing around 8,000 lights every day. Conventional lights of 40, 70, 120, 150, 250 and 400 watts are being replaced with LEDs of 20, 35, 60, 70, 110 ad 190 watts. These LED street lights have been fitted in South Delhi and Visakhapatnam corporations too. The objective of EESL is to implement energy-efficient projects in association with municipal corporations and municipalities all over the country.
