Existing policies for tribals need to be revisited: Andhra Tribal Welfare Minister

HYDERABAD: Innovation and collaboration are necessary for development of tribals in the country, said Nakka Ananda Babu, minister for social and tribal welfare in AP, on Tuesday. He was speaking on the sidelines of the two-day national conference on ‘Revisiting Tribal Policies, Research and Innovation’ held at the University of Hyderabad. The minister said AP was the first state in the country to have implemented the tribal sub-plan with yearly allocation of `4,253 crore.

“We have come up with a perspective plan for development of tribals in next seven years in line with Sustainable Development Goals. For this, we need to move from assumption-based planning to evidence-based planning,” he said and proposed to observe August 29 as Tribal Languages Day.

The conference is being organised in accordance to an MoU signed between the AP government and Centre for Innovation in Public Systems. The conference aims to bring together policy makers, administrators and researchers on the same platform, mainly to deliberate on the roadmap for research activity to be carried out among the scheduled tribes of AP post bifurcation of the state. The second day of the seminar will see planery sessions on natural resource management, education, language and culture, livelihood and gender.
