Government hospitals also flouting waste disposal norms: Telangana State Pollution Control Board

They receive funds from state govt for proper waste disposal

HYDERABAD: It is not just the corporate hospitals but government hospital like Osmania General Hospital, which has more than 1,500 inpatients on any given day, is not disposing biomedical waste as per rules. This was found during surprise checks made by the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB).

TSPCB has decided to conduct such checks across all hospitals in the state, starting off with well known corporate and government hospitals.

A TSPCB official said, “It was found that biomedical waste is not being properly disposed at OGH, including anatomical waste. It was shocking to know that the waste in these hospitals is being disposed along with domestic waste which is very dangerous.

The hospital receives funds from the state government for proper disposal of the biomedical waste but it was not being done. The hospital superintendent has been informed about it, as it is his responsibility to ensure proper disposal of the waste.”

When contacted, P Satyanarayana Reddy, member secretary, TSPCB, said, “We have been conducting checks since the last three days at various government and private hospitals and this will continue. In the districts TSPCB officials from zonal offices will conduct the checks,” he said.

“At a meeting conducted earlier the hospital managements were directed to follow proper disposal methods but some were not doing it.  Action will be taken against the violators,”  he said.

Reddy said that Dr Rajiv Sharma, chief advisor to Telangana government and TSPCB chairman will also conduct a meeting with officials of health department and with head of Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad on the issue.
