HYDERABAD: Thirty people were rescued by firemen this morning from the terrace of a six-floor building in Shamshabad near Hyderabad after a fire broke out on the ground floor housing an ESI dispensary. No casualties or injuries were reported.

The fire was ignited in a doctor's room on the ground floor of Anupama Residency, a six-floor building that the Fire Service said lacked fire-fighting equipment.

As the fire spread on the ground floor, smoke filled the upper floors, forcing people living there to rush to the terrace.

The fire service suspects a faulty electric switchboard shorted and ignited the fire.

Fire engines from Rajendranagar, Chandulal Baradari, Maheshwaram and Shamshabad were rushed to fight the fire. As some firefighters controlled the fire in the ESI dispensary, others got into the first floor using a ladder and escorted people to the top of the building. A Bronto sky lift was also rushed to the spot but it was not needed.

Fire officer G V Prasad of Ranga Reddy district said the ESI dispensary had no fire extinguishers and the building itself did not have the mandatory no-objection certificate from Fire Department.

Prasad said the owner of the building will be prosecuted.
