HYDERABAD:  For the residents of Anand Nagar colony, water is supplied on alternate days, and that too with a disparity. The quantity and time-duration for which water is supplied to the residents depend on the economic status of the residents. While the residents of gated-apartment complexes in Anand Nagar colony in Khairatabad ward receive more water for longer hours, those belonging to the economically weaker section residing in the Anand Nagar extension have to struggle for their water requirement.

The water board provides water to the colony for one-and-half hour on alternate days. This part of the colony is marked with tar-roads, paved footpaths and gated communities. However, walk 50 metre towards Anand Nagar extension, the footpaths disappear into narrow lanes lined with housing quarters. At the entrance of the colony sits a 2,000-litre tank aimed to provide water for over 3,000 persons. The tank sits bone dry.

Built by the water board, the tank meant to serve houses that do not have a water connection. The board fills the tank on a regular basis but the water serves only those who live in its close proximity.
“Water comes for half-an-hour in the morning and the flow is as weak as a small boy’s  piss,” said Kalyan, a resident of the colony.

“We don’t mind if the water is provided only for this time, but at least the flow should be good,” he added. “We have not received any complaint regarding the water issue. But a difference in water supply within a supply line could be due to elevation of the area,” said M Prabhu, general manager with HMWS&SB, in-charge of Khairathabad and surrounding wards. We will look into this and file a report,” he added.

No one to represent
While the residents of Anand Nagar claim they come under Khairathabad ward number 91, and identify P Vijaya Reddy, belonging to the TRS, as their elected corporator, the corporator washed her hands off the issues faced by them. “The responsibility of the ward rests with another corporator,” she said.
