Street-level urban rejuvenation works underway at Hyderabad Metro stations

The street-level urban rejuvenation works taken up by HMRL at all metro stations in the 30-km Miyapur-Ameerpet-Nagole stretch is progressing at a brisk pace

HYDERABAD: The street-level urban rejuvenation works taken up by HMRL at all metro stations in the 30-km Miyapur-Ameerpet-Nagole stretch is progressing at a brisk pace.Works including shifting of electrical transformers, RMUs, electrical and telephone boxes, widening of culverts, relaying of storm water and sewer lines and adjustment of manholes have been completed at most of the 24 stations. Formation of service lanes at feasible locations are currently underway.

Up to 700 metres of every station area is being developed to international standards with sidewalks, service lanes, street furniture and green spaces, said officials. Along the stretch, there’s a metro station at every 1.2 km. Each station is divided into three zones of about 230 metres. The main station area, with four entry/exit points is called zone ‘B’. The sides of the main station area is called ‘A’ and ‘C’. Having overcome most hurdles, the HMRL is confident of completing street-level works on zone ‘B’ of almost all 24 stations in the next few weeks.

The features of street-level urban rejuvenation works include maintenance of uniform main carriage way of 4 or 3 lanes, depending upon road widths as per GHMC Master Plan.

Where the road widths are 150 ft or 200 ft, 2 lane service lanes on each side of the Metro station is provided.Wherever service lanes are provided, intermediate footpath with a width of 10 ft to 25 ft is being laid with good kerbing, proper concrete bed and good quality tiles over that with aesthetic design patterns. Safety railing will be provided in the main station area (zone ‘B’) on the road edge of the footpath to a minimum length of 250 mtrs so that the Metro commuters will not come on to the main carriage way — this will ensure better flow of road traffic, ensure  pedestrian safety and prevent overcrowding of station areas.

Bus bays, auto bays, parking areas are being created in consultation with TSRTC, Traffic Police and GHMC officials. These are being planned on spaces created by removing encroachments and using the dead space available. Modern, eco-friendly toilets will be provided on both sides of all Metro stations, officials said.
