Sedentary lifestyle, job stress bad for your heart

HYDERABAD: Tomorrow is World Heart Day. To understand the reasons why people are not able to put in efforts to improve their heart health, Saffolalife, the heart care initiative of Marico’s Saffola, has recently conducted ‘Saffolalife Study 2017’. Responses were compiled via telephonic interviews with 1,306 people aged between 25 to 44 years across Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, Chennai and Kolkata. 220 individuals took part in the study from the city. Some of the key findings of the study from respondents in the city on the reasons for their not being able to spare time for a healthy heart were:

Long working hours - 83 percent
Commuting time - 68 percent
Job-related stress - 75 percent
Stress at home (women) - 84 percent
Addicted to smartphones (women)   - 76 percent
Household work (women) - 85 percent
Believing that healthy food is not tasty - 81 percent

Speaking at the event, cardiologist Dr Sharat Chandra said, “Despite the grim scenario, the silver lining is that some corporates are implementing standing workstations, where employees work while standing instead of sitting. This itself helps burn 53 percent more calories when compared to the seated posture”. He also urged people to take time to walk for 15 minutes four times a day, and to take the stairs instead of elevator. The crux of the matter is to lead an active lifestyle that would help reduce the risk of Cardiovascular disease, he added.
