Man dies in an attempt to escape from police custody

A 23-year-old youngster died in an attempt to escape from police custody on Friday in Hyderabad, The youngster was picked up by the police on suspicion of an accused in house breaking offences.

HYDERABAD:  A 23-year-old youngster died in an attempt to escape from police custody on Friday in Hyderabad, The youngster was picked up by the police on suspicion of an accused in house breaking offences. However, police claimed that the accused died when he jumped into a quarry, while escaping.


The suspect identified as Akkinapally Ganesh of Gudapur village in Nalgonda district was picked up by the patrolling party of Hayathnagar police station, when Ganesh and his associate Ramesh were moving under suspicious circumstances at Munaganuru village.


According to police, the duo was carrying cutting pliers, some cash, liquor bottles and material used to commit house breaking offence. When the duo was intercepted for questioning, Ramesh said that he works as a driver of an earth moving vehicle at Siva Ganga quarry. When the police team took the duo to the quarry, panicked Ganesh got down of the car and jumped into a quarry after running for some distance.


“It is a very unfortunate incident. We wanted to check, whether the claims of the suspects were true. Ganesh ran from police and jumped into the quarry. He suffered not only head injury but also injuries to other parts of his body,” said Hayathnagar inspector J Narender Goud.


The inspector said that though Ganesh was an accused in around 20 cases of house breaking, the patrolling team wanted to check, whether he was working as a driver at the quarry, as he claimed.


“When he was taken to the nearby hospital, he was declared brought dead. A case has been booked under Section 176 of CrPC for investigation,” said a senior police official from Rachakonda police commissionerate.
