GHMC will soon collect tipping fee while issuing building permissions

While collecting the building fees for issuing building permissions in twin cities, the GHMC proposes to simultaneously collect ‘tipping fee’.

HYDERABAD: While collecting the building fees for issuing building permissions in twin cities, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) proposes to simultaneously collect ‘tipping fee’ for transportation of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste to the four C&D waste sites which are coming up in different parts of the city.

At present, house owners and builders, after obtaining the building permissions, are demolishing old structures and dumping the generated waste in open places, storm water drains, open nalas etc. But, this sort of practice is strictly prohibited as per the GHMC Act.

“Dumping of construction waste was leading to encroachment of water bodies. Also dumping of C&D waste at garbage collection points is making the job of GHMC difficult while transporting it to the dumping yard at Janwaharnagar,” Mayor Bonthu Rammohan said.

In order to find a sustainable solution for managing C&D waste, the corporation is going to establish four C&D waste plants at Fathullaguda, Jeedimetla, Kothwalguda and Mallapur.

The GHMC will collect a user fee or charges at the rate `360 per tonne. Mayor said the town planning wing would collect the information about the existing structure, area and number of floors from the citizens who apply for building permissions with GHMC. Based on the information, tipping fee would be collected from the applicants for transporting the waste.
