HYDERABAD: An elderly man, who was waiting to cross the road during peak-hour traffic, fell into a pit dug up for utilities near Balanagar in the city on Thursday.

The deceased, Oruganti Chandrasekhar Rao (70) of Adarshnagar in Balanagar, was returning home from a nearby temple in the morning when a speeding RTC bus heading towards Balanagar knocked aside the caution board put up by the agency that was executing the work.

Rao, who was holding the board for support, was thrown off balance and into the 8-foot-deep pit along with the board. Under the impact, Rao, a heart patient, suffered cardiac arrest and died even before an ambulance could reach the spot, Balanagar police inspector P Bhikshapathi Rao said.

A case was registered based on a complaint lodged by the family members. A pushcart vendor, a witness to the incident, said, “The old man fell in the pit when a bus whizzed past him very closely.”
