HYDERABAD: Afzal Sagar Nagar in Mallepally wears the same look everytime it rains for a couple of hours. Residents here are so used to dirty drainage water entering their homes that they have given up on civic authorities. Monday’s rain, however, they say, has been the most damaging one economically.
Rainwater from Masab Tank, Banjara Hills and Habeeb Nagar nala in the locality gets accumulated in Afzal Sagar Nagar bastis every time it rains heavily.

“In no time, roads were blocked and water entered our houses on Monday. The grains and clothes I had saved for my daughter’s upcoming marriage were damaged in the water,” said Shehnaz Begum, a resident here. “GHMC officials are not interested in solving this issue permanently. It wasn’t the first time when filthy water seeped into my house and shop. Moreover, everyone is compelled to stay indoors,” said Farooqi Majid Razi, a tailor.

Another resident Mehrun Nisa, a homemaker, said, “Only because we have coped with the situation, the government and civic officials should not make it a compulsion for us. The problem ought to be solved.” Residents also asked why GHMC takes over a day to reach out to help when filthy water in their houses can even affect health of their children. Ward corporator Tarannum Naz was not available for response.
