HYDERABAD: If things go according to plan, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will soon start tapping revenue from the ubiquitous electrical transformer while enhancing the safety of the public as well as sanitation.

The civic body plans to do this by sprucing up the vicinity of 1,000 transformers in each of the six zones in the city and then allowing private agencies to give it as advertisement space. These 6,000 electrical transformers will be developed under Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode by engaging private agencies on Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis with a concession period of 10 years.

The objective is to build a transformer structure pillar, a safety fence and maintain a structural pole with provision for advertisement space with a single board as per the sample provided by the civic body. The agencies shall be responsible for its designing, engineering, procurement, financing, construction, operation and maintenance.

GHMC officials told Express that the civic body has invited requests for proposals for the development of the surroundings around the electrical transformers with a provision of advertisement space in select locations. For this, the civic body has identified two types of Distribution Transformer (DTR) locations. These include 157 Type-A and 843 Type-B DTR locations in LB Nagar zone, 345 and 655 in Charminar zone, 102 and 898 in Serilingampally zone, 337 and 663 in Khairatabad zone, 297 and 703 in Kukatpally zone and 232 Type-A and 768 Type-B in Secunderabad zone.

The project includes the construction of a column-type DTR plinth top slab including four cross beams beneath the slab. The height of the advertisement board should not exceed 15 feet from the ground. There will be complete fencing around DTR with a height of five feet over the compound/support wall. The rear side of the electrical transformers will also be fenced if it is open and no wall is present besides the provision of a gate.

The selected agencies have to take up minimum maintenance requirements or would have to pay a penalty. This maintenance includes removing grass and refilling gravel to avoid waterlogging in the DTR yard, keeping the vicinity of the DPR areas clean, painting the pillar, slab, DTR pole, support wall and other associated equipment at least twice a year and arranging illumination during nighttimes.
