KOCHI: It was after much wait that the Thrikkakara grama panchayat, which hosts the headquarters of the financial capital of the state, was declared a municipality.

Even after the elections to the municipality, the members had to wait for over a month to take oath of office on November 30.

The tenure of the panchayat committee ended only on November 30.

According to the Panchayati Raj Act, the new members can assume office only after their predecessors complete five years in office.

In 2005, the elections to Parakkadavu and Edappally block panchayats, Thrikkakara, Edakkattuvayal, Parakkadavu, Marady, Mudakkuzha and Kunnukara grama panchayats were delayed by a month owing to legal issues.

The election of the heads of these local bodies, except Thrikkakara municipality, will be held on December 4. The election of the chairperson of Thrikkakara municipality will be held on December 6. In Thrikkakara municipality, 43 members took oath of office. In Parakkadavu and Edappally block panchayats, 13 members each were sworn in on Tuesday ?
