KOCHI: Certain illegal activities are allegedly taking place at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit to provide undue promotion to the library staff, who do not posses the required UGC qualification.

According to the documents accessed by Express, a meeting of the staff committee held on January 17 had recommended the syndicate to redesignate three reference assistants as assistant librarians grade-I in the pay scale of Rs 12,930-20,250.

Official sources said the finance committee had requested the syndicate to accept the recommendation of the staff committee and issue necessary orders in this regard. "Now, it is only a matter of official sanction to redesignate the staff. They have hurriedly made the recommendation to give undue promotion to the staff, who are not eligible for promotion once the state pay commission report is implemented from April 1," the sources said.

They alleged that the staff had been redesignated to provide them relief once the pay commission report is implemented.

As per the UGC norms, the candidates to be posted as assistant librarian should posses master's degree in Library Science/Information Science/Documentation Science or should have an equivalent professional degree with at least 55 percent marks.

The candidates should also clear the national-level test (NET) in library science.

Sources said those who were redesignated did not have the required qualification.

"According to the information received through the Right to Information Act, none of the reference assistants appointed in the university has cleared the UGCNET in Library Science. So promoting them to the post of assistant librarian is illegal," sources said.
