In the wake of increasing number of complaints against the thin attendance at various departments of the Corporation, the civic administration is planning to launch biometric punching system by August.

The new system will be launched at the main office of the Corporation, the zonal offices and the circle office.

The move is expected to prevent fake attendance and monitor the punctuality of staff. The bio-metric punching machines will be installed by Keltron.

“We are planning to launch the system by August. The employee registration and collection of thump impression of the staff working in the Corporation main office are over. Now we have started the employee registration for the zonal offices and circle offices,” said Deputy Mayor B Bhadra.

She said that by installing machines at the circle office, the civic body can ensure the regular attendance of the contingency workers too.

“The details of the contingency workers, photo and thump impression will be collected this week itself,” she said.

The Corporation, in its annual budget, has allotted `15 lakh for the purpose.

A total of six punching machines will be installed at the main office, while one machine each will be placed at zonal and circle offices.

“There are 400 employees working at the Corporation main office alone. Apart from the Mayor and councillors, all the staff including the Corporation secretary will be issued punching cards,” said an official with the IT Department of the Corporation.

He said that once Keltron completes the work, the database will be linked with the E-Governance software. Each staff will be given a unique employee ID, he said.

If successfully implemented, this will be the second time that the Corporation is trying its hand in punching.

In 2000, the then Council introduced punching system, but it was withdrawn soon following the stiff objection of the employees’ unions.

“But this time,we will go ahead with the system and it is our duty to ensure that employees are always available at the office, Bhadra added.
