Keralotsavam: Gala days ahead for youth

The district panchayat in association with the Youth Welfare Board is gearing up for Keralotsavam 2012, a district-level cultural extravaganza for youth to be held from November 30 to December 2.

Excise Minister K Babu will inaugurate the event at the district panchayat hall at 10 am on Thursday. District panchayat president Eldhose Kunnappillil will preside over the function. The inaugural ceremony will be followed by the arts festival.

Contests in around 50 events will be held in different venues in Kakkanad and nearby areas. Literary and cultural events will also be held in various venues in Thrikkakara. Sports and games will be held at Rajagiri College. Volleyball and football matches will be held in Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha. Around 1000 youth aged between 15 and 35 are expected to participate in the arts, literary, cultural and sports contests.

The contestants who won from the panchayat and block level and municipalities and Corporation are participating, according to the organisers. The winners will participate in the state Keralotsavam.

The district panchayat has set aside `2 lakh  for the event and the Youth Welfare Board, `1 lakh. The local bodies will also contribute. “Around `6 lakh is required for organising the event. Funds are a major constraint,” said sources.
