Soccer Tournament final today

‘TNIE Goal 2013’ awaits a champion on Saturday as the All-Kerala Inter-Collegiate Football Tournament organised by The New Indian Express draws to a close at the Sacred Heart College Ground in Thevara.

In Saturday’s final match, reigning champions Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur, will meet ‘Goal 2012’ semifinalist Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will crown the champions of ‘Goal 2013’ at the valedictory function to be held at the SH College Ground at 6.30 pm, while KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala will present the cash prize of `1 lakh.

Union Minister of State for Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution K V Thomas will present the trophy to the runners-up while Excise and Ports Minister K Babu will present them cash purse of Rs 50,000.

Mayor Tony Chammany, Hibi Eden MLA, All-India Football Federation vice-president K M I Mather and TNIE Editorial Director Prabhu Chawla will attend the valedictory function.

The 16-team tournament was kicked off by Union Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Ajay Maken on January 16. So far, the tournament has witnessed 103 goals in 30 matches.

On Friday, Sree Kerala Varma College defeated Farook  College, Kozhikode, 2-0 in the first semifinal while Nirmala College edged Payyannur College, Kannur, 2-1 in the second semifinal to set up an exciting final.
