Campaign to 'adopt' tree saplings

The city will celebrate this year’s World Environment Day in a unique way by not just planting tree saplings but also ‘adopting’ them. The World Environment Day falls on Wednesday, May 5.

The initiative is led by Benny Joseph, state convener of Janapaksham.

Each sapling planted in this drive will be taken care of for at least three months, he said.

“June 5 is a day for PR exercise for many -- when many of the who’s who in the town will ‘re-invent’ their environment-friendly image -- they will plant a sapling, maybe pose for a photo, and then go away, leaving the sapling unattended. But we are trying to make a difference,” he said.

The campaign will see saplings being planted from Gold Souk Mall, Vytilla, to Edappally Lulu junction

and to Kandanoor junction.

District Collector Sheik I Pareek, industrialist Kochousep Chittilapalli, filmstars Captain Raju, Devan, Major Ravi, environmental activist Harish Vasudevan, M R Rajendran, Advocate  P R Padmanabhan, Advocate P G Suresh, Residence Association Council president S Balakrishnan and office bearers of organisation

‘Tree’ will attend the function.
