Adding to the staff shortage which has crippled the postal services in the district, the post of five multi-tasking servants were cancelled recently at the Ernakulam head postoffice here.

This comes at a time when already 24 postmen posts have been cancelled from the Ernakulam Divisional office here.  The station postmaster had received the order from the Postal Superintendent the other day. According to members of the National Federation of Postal Employees Union, such steps would have a crippling effect on the entire system.

“Multi-tasking servants belong to the category which is responsible for sealing postal letters. If such posts are removed, it will greatly effect the staff-starved sector,” they said.

Other staff members have been asked to take up the responsibility. Currently, the mazdoor post is lying vacant. These employees are responsible for taking the postal matters across the office.
