Gold smuggling: Court to give order on bail plea

The Ernakulam Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (Economic Offence) will give its order on the bail petition of Hiromasa V Sebastian, a flight attendant, and her friend Rahila Cheerayi, both accused in the gold smuggling case, on Tuesday.

The Ernakulam Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (Economic Offence) will give its order on the bail petition of Hiromasa V Sebastian, a flight attendant, and her friend Rahila Cheerayi, both accused in the gold smuggling case, on Tuesday.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) strongly opposed the bail of the accused when it came for consideration on Monday.

DRI Special Prosecutor C P Udayabhanu opposed the bail petition claiming that the probe into the case is in the initial stage and release of the accused would affect the investigation. The DRI also submitted that they are ready to file the progress report of the case if the court requires it.

However, the defense counsel submitted that the two women were just carriers of gold and the real accused were yet to be traced.

After hearing both sides, N V Raju, Magistrate, asked about the quantity of the gold seized from them. He also inquired whether they had any history of smuggling. Later, he posted the petition to Tuesday for giving order.

Meanwhile, the DRI would come out with a lookout notice against Shabas, Abdul Layis, and Nabeel, the persons who allegedly gave the gold to Hiromasa and Rahila in Dubai.

DRI officials said that the procedure for this would be completed in the coming days. According to the officials, these persons are suspected to be staying in the Gulf.

Besides, the DRI also found that the addresses of Shalini and another woman given to them by Hiromasa and Rahila were fake. The DRI has initiated steps to trace these women.

The officials said that they could not find any link between Fayaz, the accused in the Nedumbassery gold smuggling case and accused in Karipoor case.

They suspect that Fayaz and accused in Karipur gold smuggling case belong to different groups operating in Dubai.
