The campaign through social media, seeking public support for a modern cancer research institute and treatment centre in Kochi, was formally launched by Kochi Mayor Tony Chammany at a function held at Justice V R Krishna Iyer’s residence on Saturday.
The Mayor said that the Corporation would take the initiative to convene a joint meeting of all people’s representatives in Ernakulam district to discuss the matter.
The volunteers of the movement, headed by Justice V R Krishna Iyer, demanding a cancer centre in Kochi have created a facebook page.
Extending support to the movement, the civic body had earlier passed a resolution demanding the cancer centre.
The facebook page mainly contains pictures and clippings of news reports on the movement that have appeared in newspapers. “The presence in social media will help us gain maximum public support” said Dr N K Sanil Kumar, a volunteer of the movement.
Launched by actor Dileep last month, the campaign for cancer centre has been gaining momentum.
