There was double delight for four athletes on Sunday, the second day of the 57th Kerala State Schools Athletics Championship.

Among the state’s more promising athletes, Chithra P U, Rakhil A G, Jisna Mathew and Jisha V V picked up their second gold on the synthetic track of the Maharaja’s College stadium here.

Long distance runner Chithra, who had won the senior girls’ 3,000m race on the opening day breaking her own meet record, repeated the feat in the 5,000m race.

This time, she bettered Thara M D’s record set in 2011. Kozhikode’s Jisna Mathew won her second gold of the meet as she produced an impressive sprint to come first in the junior girls’ 100m race. A trainee of Usha School of Athletics, Jisna had also stamped her authority in the 400m race on the opening day.

Meanwhile, Rakhil A G grabbed his second gold as he came first in the junior boys’ 100 m sprint, after having won the long jump gold. Jisha V V, student of HS, Parali, also joined the list as she clinched the 400-m hurdles’ crown on Sunday in senior girls’ category. She had also struck gold in the 400m flat event.  Jisha and Ernakulam’s Smruthimol rubbed shoulders till the final hurdle, but a quick burst of speed from Jisha after her final hurdle took her ahead of Smruthimol on the way to the finish.
