The Department of Islamic History at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, organised a national seminar on ‘Gender Studies in Islam’.

The Department of Islamic History at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam,  organised a national seminar on ‘Gender Studies in Islam’. The inaugural session was addressed by Mary Metilda, former principal, Maharaja’s College. Latha Raj, Principal, Maharaja’s College presided over the function.

The seminar dealt with equality and equity of women. A paper was presented by A Muhamuda Beegum, Syndicate member, Cochin University. “We have to change the misconceptions that culture and society have on women,” she said. The seminar discussed about gender identity, gender roles, gender socialisation, gender equity and feminism. Shajila Beevi, assistant professor, Department of Islamic History also spoke. A debate among students and paper presentations were also conducted.
