The Kalady-Malayattoor Road, which is in a dilapidated condition, will soon get a fresh lease of life as the state government has allotted Rs 75 lakh for the renovation and resurfacing of the road, which will be a great relief to Malayattoor pilgrims.

The Kalady-Malayattoor road connects Kalady with international pilgrim centre Malayattoor, which is visited by hundreds of people every day.  With the renovation of the road, a pilgrimage to Malayattoor will become easier. The total fund for renovation will be allotted in three different phases. Out of the total allotment, Rs 25 lakh is for the remodeling of road between Kaladi town and Oomanthodu. Another Rs 25 lakh is allotted for the stretch between Kottamattam junction and SNDP junction, while the remaining Rs 25 lakh is for the road from St Thomas Higher Secondary School to the Malayattoor Church.

Earlier, the PWD had allotted `18 lakh for the road between Oomanthodu and Kottamattam bridge while the Irrigation Department had allotted Rs 54 lakh for the 3-km road at Kadappara.

Officials said tender proceedings for the road reconstruction would begin soon and the work would commence by the end of this year. The officials said with the completion of the road renovation, the traffic through the area can be managed more effectively.

“We have already taken some major steps to decongest the busy Kalady Junction. The Kalady Canal Bund Road was laid with concrete and now buses and other heavy vehicles coming from Malayattoor are using this road for entering Kalady town.

“This has helped in easing out the heavy traffic congestion that the city had earlier witnessed. Our plan for a proper traffic plan for Kalady town will be completed once the Kalady-Malayattoor road renovation is completed,” the officials added.
