Neonatal Resuscitation Workshop

An advanced neonatal resuscitation workshop will be conducted at the Ernakalam Lourdes Hospital on Sunday. As per the Hospital authorities, the National IAP advance NRP certification course is being organised by Indian Academy of Pediatrics in association with the National Neonatology Forum to train the pediatricians and neonatologists involved in care of newborn in the skills of advanced neonatal resuscitation.

The course is designed meticulously by American Academy of Pediatrics, Indian Academy of Pediatrics and National Neonatology Forum jointly and  include new methods like performance checklist, integrated skills station , simulation and debriefing.

As per medical experts, In India, approximately three lakh babies die every year due to asphyxia.

Asphyxiated neonates require prompt, skilled resuscitation to survive the situation. Neonatal resuscitation is simple, inexpensive, available and cost effective but is not initiated or the methods used in resuscitating babies are inadequate or wrong in most of the cases of asphyxia.  Performance checklist is meant for repeated practice on advance manikin and integrated skill station is designed for analysing the individual skills or resuscitation on advance manikins. Simulation and debriefing are the newer tools which aid the assessment of participants in a group.

It includes video shooting of resuscitation exercise and debriefing afterward. The hospital authorities said that it is for the first time that such a programmes is being conducted in Kerala.
