KOCHI: Kerala Madya Nirodhana Samithi has urged on Wednesday all departments of the state bureaucracy, including the judiciary,  executives and the legislature, to come forward and implement ‘total prohibition’,  in the state.

The samithi has reportedly planned to start  an indefinite satyagraha in Kochi from Thursday. A motor rally is also planned to spread the message of the total prohibition.

Justice V R Krishna Iyer will inaugurate the satyagraha at the former Gandhi Peace Foundation premises at Kacherippady. Noted critique M Leelavathi will flag off the  rally. Soman P Paul will be the first participant in the sathyagraha.

According to the samithi officials, 90 percent of the population will support prohibition if a plebiscite is held.

They compared the ban on the bars similar to the ban on opium and smoking.

“People stopped taking opium when it was banned, and smoking decreased as it was banned in public places. Alcoholism also will follow suit once the availability of alcohol is stopped”, they said.

The samithi stated that the loss incurred by the society can also be curbed as brain drain, disintegration of families and children, co-dependency, mental disorders,  impotency, loss of innovative ideas, violence and inefficiency in jobs are all part of alcoholism.

The samithi, meanwhile, discarded the claims of Tourism and IT industry that they might collapse once the ban is imposed. It is only a trick to keep away industries from this land, the samithi said.

It also refuted the claim of those who said the hotel industry will be affected, but on the contrary, they said, hotels will thrive with the ban.

Holistic growth of the society is what the samithi expects. Gandhiji’s dream will be fulfilled once the prohibition comes into  reality. The money spent on alcohol will reach the family members, said the officials.
