Inspired by Art and Music Therapy, Doctors to Sing for Patients

Prominent doctors from various hospitals in the city will join hands with KBF to conduct music therapy for patients

Inspired by the tremendous positive change brought about by the arts and music therapy conceived by the Kochi Binnale Foundation (KBF), prominent doctors from various hospitals in the city will join hands with KBF to conduct music therapy for patients.

The concert led solely by doctors will be held at Ernakulam General hospital on Wednesday at 10.30 am.

Bonney Thomas, KBF research coordinator, said the concert led by doctors will be the 11th programme in the list. “Witnessing the positive change due   to the therapy, the cultural wing of IMA came out in volition to organise  this programme. They will also meet the expenses required for the programme,” he said.

Dr Chandriaka, state president, IMA (cultural wing), said the idea sprouted when she was convinced of the positive change happening to the patients due to the therapy.

“I have spend most of the Wednesdays in the General Hospital listening to their music. Patients, even the bystanders and the hospital staff, are awed by its effect. Hence, I thought of taking to music to them through us. Now who can understand a patient than a doctor. Here the doctors will sing for their patients,” she said.

Dr Chandrika said that she then discussed it with the IMA authorities.

“They welcomed my suggestion with whole heart, especially Dr Venugopal, the Cochin chapter president of IMA cultural wing. He is a good singer and jumped at the proposal,” she said.

Dr Junaid Rahman, Dr N S D Raju, Dr Rani, Dr Cia Moideen, Dr G N Ramesh, Dr Mohan George Madhavamangalam, Dr Manoj Kusra will participate in the programme.

Bonney Thomas said that many medical students have also come to him to  participate in the Music and Art therapy. The Arts and Music Therapy undertaken by KBF with the support of Global Arts and Medicine Institute, Cleveland clinic in Abu Dhabi, District Administration and Ernakulam General Hospital was launched on February 1 by the Union Minister K V Thomas. Since then it has presented many prominent musicians and singers including music director Bijipal and singer Afsal.

“Afsals was a trend setter and it garnered various followers. Besides, the Mohammed Rafi Orchestra contributed considerably to this programme,” he said.
