Cops Trip on Vanishing Registers

KOCHI: Police officials are finding it hard to nail illegal money lenders with evidence, because they efficiently hide the registers and bill books on money lending.

An official with the Special Branch said that when they get an inputs about the money lenders, it is passed to Station Head Officer.

“By the time we raid the residences of alleged offenders, the documents would have been hidden. If there is no evidence, we would not be able to register cases. People are often afraid of registering complaints against these money lenders because of their criminal background,” an official said.

Officials in the Special Branch said that most Tamil Nadu natives who were into the business have left the city, with the police intensifying the drive against loan sharks.

In the initial stages of the drive, it was Tamil Nadu natives who were booked mostly, but as the raid entered the 10th day more locals are getting arrested, sources said.
