Harilal of Kottolil house, Kannompillybhagom, Kayamkulam, is a carpenter who ekes out a living working hard from dawn to dusk at a furniture shop in Kayamkulam.

An active worker of the Communist party, his service-oriented mind and reading made him realise the importance of life, which led him to engage in the highest largesse possible to a man. He donated the organs of his departed son Pranav, 19, to five people who were waiting for a fresh lease of life in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Sudeesh, a relative of the Pranav, said, “Harilal is a Communist party leader and his broad mind and generosity led him to donate the organs of his son to five people who were in need of them, when he was in utter grief.”

It was a double tragedy for Harilal, as Pranav’s grandfather had died on Thursday.  Pranav was a BCom student at Presidency College, Charummood. He met with an accident at  4 pm on Sunday  at Vandhikapally Junction at Muthukulam. His bike collided with another bike and he fell on the road. A friend, Binoy, who was riding pillion, escaped with minor injuries.

Pranav was rushed to Haripad Taluk Hospital and later to Alappuzha Medical College Hospital (MCH). But the relatives alleged that the MCH authorities did not give proper medical care, making them wait for hours without giving any treatment.

After three hours, Pranav’s relatives shifted him to Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi. The doctors declared Pranav brain dead by late night on Monday.

Apart from Harilal, he is survived by mother Bindhu and sister Dressya. The body was shifted to Alappuzha Medical College for post-mortem. The funeral will be held on Wednesday.
