KOCHI: In keeping with the spirit of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Southern Naval Command has embarked on a mass cleanliness drive on the Naval Base premises.

All the echelons of the Southern Naval Command, from the senior-most official to the junior-most, and their families participated voluntarily in the cleaning and sprucing up activities.   Students of the Navy Children School functioning inside the Naval Base also took part in the drive.

The activities included cleaning of drains to prevent water-logging in low lying areas, removal of wild growth from buildings/residential quarters, pruning of hedges and maintenance of green spaces/gardens to prevent breeding of mosquitoes and other disease carriers.

Special attention was given to eco-friendly waste management on the Naval campus and removal of plastic waste and garbage from the waterfront.   It has been decided to conduct such drives on a monthly basis so that the momentum could be sustained.

The Southern Naval Command aims to take the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to the next level to enhance environmental awareness, inculcate green energy initiatives and ensure proper waste management practices amongst Naval personnel and their families through regular programmes such as lectures on the importance of neat, clean and hygienic surroundings in community living.
