Student's Suspension Stayed for a Month

KOCHI: The Kerala HC on Friday stayed for one month, the order suspending a student from Farook College, Kozhikode, for allegedly acting against management’s instruction that boys and girls should sit separately on campus, including in classrooms and in the canteen.

Justice V Chitambaresh issued interim order on the petition filed by Dinu K, first year BA Sociology student of the college seeking to quash order suspending him from the college. The petitioner submitted that nine first-year boys and girls including him sat on benches while attending the Common Malayalam class were asked to sit seperately or leave the class by the lecturer. The strength is 130 and two students who came to class late had seats vacant only in a bench where three girls were seated. They occupied that seat and teacher asked them to sit seperately or leave the class.

Dinu was suspended by the college authorities on October 29 for violating the college discipline. Eight other students, including girls, who had been ousted from the class for sharing bench, had earlier been let into the class only after tendering a written apology, the petition stated.
