KUFOS Invites Applications for New-generation Courses

KOCHI:    The Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) has invited applications for its new-generation programmes in Fisheries, Ocean Science, Ocean Engineering, Climate Change, Aquatic Ecosystem and Management.

“The courses cover various aspects of fisheries science such as anatomy, taxonomy, physiology, genetics, breeding, farming, nutrition, engineering, fish catching, boat operation, processing, preparation of value-added fish products and fisheries economics. The course in ocean science goes deep into remote-sensing, geo-science, physical oceanography, biological oceanography, marine microbiology and drug formulation,” the varsity authorities said.

KUFOS also offers engineering courses in Fisheries (Coastal and Offshore) and Coastal Safety and Harbour. The management programmes include Energy Management, Fisheries Management, Rural Management, Human Resource Management, Finance and Marketing Management. Courses in Food Science, Marine Chemistry, Biotechnology, Statistics, Maritime Law and Disaster Management are also being offered.

“The projected manpower recruitment in the fields of fisheries, ocean studies and allied sectors is estimated at 32 lakh by 2025, both in private sector and public sector.  Postgraduates who clear the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment (ARS) competitive examination, conducted by the Agriculture Scientists Recruitment Board, New Delhi, are eligible to get employment in the ICAR; Central Institutes of Fisheries; CIFE, Mumbai; CIFA, Bhubaneswar; CIBA, Chennai; CMFRI, Kochi; CIFT, Kochi; CIFRI, Kolkata; NBFGR, Lucknow and DCFR, Bhimtal. As per the projection, there is shortage of Fisheries graduates/postgraduates in the country at present,” varsity authorities pointed out.The courses conducted by the various schools include MSc in various disciplines, MBA in Fisheries Management, Master of Fisheries Science (MFSc), M-Tech and LLM  in Maritime Law (evening course).

MSc is offered in disciplines  such as Physical Oceanography and Ocean Modelling; Biological Oceanography and Biodiversity; Food Science and Technology; Statistics; Remote Sensing and GIS; Applied Geosciences; Disaster Management; Bio-technology and Bio-informatics; Marine Micro-biology and Marine Drugs; Climate Science; and Marine Chemistry. Science graduates in the relevant disciplines with 50 per cent marks can apply for the Msc courses.

KUFOS is the only university in India that offers MBA in Fisheries Management. The university offers two MBA courses, of which one is with specialisation in Fisheries/Human Resource/Marketing/Finance/Rural Management. Graduates with 55 per cent marks can apply for the course. The other MBA is in Energy Management, for which B-Tech graduates in the relevant disciplines can apply.The university also offers Master of Fisheries Science (MFSc) in Aquaculture; Fish Nutrition and Feed Technology; Aquatic Animal Health Management; Fisheries Resource Management; Aquatic Environment Management; Fisheries Engineering and Technology;  Fish Processing and Technology; Fisheries Economics;  Fish Bio-technology; and Fish Genetics and Breeding. BFSc graduates can apply for these courses.

MTech is offered in Integrated Coastal Zone Management; Ocean and Coastal Safety Engineering; Coastal and Harbour Engineering; and Fisheries Engineering. PhD programmes are offered by 14 departments under five faculties. The university also offers LLM programme in Maritime Law (evening course).
