KOCHI: The new special vehicles provided to tahasildars in the district and the Sub-collector by the district administration will help the authorities in effectively curbing illegal sand mining.
The brand new ‘Mahindra Balero’ SUVs were distributed under an initiative by the Revenue Department, which last year announced the decision to provide special vehicles exclusively for crackdown against illegal sand mining, a first-of-its-kind initiative in the State.
The project, which was submitted by District Collector M G Rajamanickam, was approved by the Revenue Minister last year. New vehicles have been distributed to all the tahasildars and the Sub-collector.
Earlier, no specials vehicles were available for the tahasildars for drives against illegal sand mining. The Collector is of the opinion that special vehicles are necessary to curb illegal sand mining, and that their absence had been delaying such drives.
“Special vehicles were distributed to the tahasildars of Paravoor, Kochi, Kanayannur, Aluva, Kunnathunad, Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam taluks as well as the Sub-collector on Thursday,” said the District Collector.
