Contempt Plea against KMRL Quashed

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday dismissed a contempt of court petition against the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) for not complying with the order of the court with regard to reclamation of land for the Metro village.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice A M Shaffique passed the order on a petition filed by land owners.  The petitioners submitted that the High Court had ordered status quo with respect to the reclamation of paddy land. However, the KMRL had filled up paddy land in excess of what was permitted. The Bench observed that it did not think that there was a case of willful disobedience. If any reclamation was done in excess of what was permitted, it did not amount to contempt of court.
