Kochi Metro Rails Reach Cochin Port

KOCHI: The rails for the Kochi Metro Rail project reached the Cochin Port on Monday. The rails, which will be attached to  the pillars, is imported from France by Tata Steel France for the Kochi Metro project. The first consignment onsists of 3500 tonnes of rails while the total requirement for Kochi Metro Rail project is 6500 tonnes. 

The usual rail tracks are laid on ballasted cushion provided by small granite stones. But the rails for Kochi Metro  Rail, which belong to ‘head-hardened’ category usually will not be laid on ballast. However, it will be laid on ballasted platforms at the area in the depot. Each Rail will have a length of 18 metres.

The authorities concerned said that the tracks will be shifted to the casting yard of Kochi Metro Rail in Kaloor after  getting the clearance of the port authorities. Since there is a huge volume of materials, the tracks will be shifted in huge trailers.

A detailed inspection on the tracks by experts will be conducted before shifting it to the casting yard.
