Karunya Medicines Worth Lakhs Found Abandoned

KOCHI:Medicines worth lakhs of rupees, supplied through Karunya Community Pharmacies, were found abandoned near the Vaduthala bridge, Pachalam, on Wednesday.

They were found by the locals in sacks near the waste collection unit of the city Corporation. The drugs were of various companies and the expiry dates of many had lapsed. There were injections worth `8,000. The bundles had payment bills of Karunya Medicine depot in Thrissur and that of parcel services, it is learnt.

“In a primary enquiry done by a pharmacist it is learnt the drugs were those supplied through Karunya pharmacies. The district medical office is not in charge of Karunya medicine supply as it comes under State Medical Services Corporation and they have to enquire it,” said district medical officer N K Kuttappan. He added that he didn’t receive any complaints from the locals and lack of staff in the office owing to election duty prevented him from sending an officer to the spot.

The drugs are in the Corporation office, Vaduthala. “Drugs are returned to the companies three months prior to their expiry,” said Karunya depot manager Rupna.
