Tough Times Ahead for Corporation Council

KOCHI: The Indian Union Muslim League’s claim for the Deputy Mayor post is a cue to the political undercurrents that the Kochi Corporation council is likely to witness in the coming years.

Tough days are ahead for the UDF leadership in Ernakulam, as the number of nominees and aspirants for the  post of Standing Committee chairpersons in the Kochi Corporation is increasing day-by-day.

“With the ‘I’ group settling for the Deputy Mayor post, the leadership will have to find candidates for the Standing Committee chairpersons. There are experienced councillors like A B Sabu of the ‘A’ group.

This time, three Standing Committees are reserved for women - Health, Education and Town Planning. Gracy Jospeh, Gracy Babu jacob, Minimol and Deleena Pinhero are the frontrunners for the posts.

“Meanwhile, the Deputy Mayor will be the Finance Standing Committee chairman, while the others - Works, Tax Appeal and Welfare - are reserved as ‘general’. Along with A B Sabu, M B Muraleedharan and K R Premkumar, Muslim League candidates T K Ashraf and P M Harris are also in the race for the Standing Committee chairperson posts,” said party leaders.
