KOCHI: Though monsoon showers are set to grace the state soon, several key pending pre-monsoon cleaning works that need to be undertaken by various government agencies are yet to be completed. These works include the repairing of roads, cleaning of canals and completion of slab laying works in some areas.

Key-works

There are some key works in the city which could not be taken-up due to the no-objection issued by the State election Commission as part of the election code of conduct. One of the major works in this regard is the repair works on the Kaloor-Kathrikkadavu stretch. Many areas on the road is in a dilapidated condition since the GCDA failed to patch up the road after laying of the pipelines by the KWA. Though the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) had completed the tendering procedures for allotting the work before the elections, the Election Commission had asked the agency to carry out the work only after May 16.

But now, with the summer rains hitting Kochi, it will become difficult for the contractors to carry out the work. The GCDA’s plan was to start the restoration of the road soon after the KWA works were over for which it had initiated tendering well in advance.

Now with the Edavappathy rains in full-force and the monsoon which is soon to follow, the authorities concerned said that the work may probably be delayed for more than three months. The busy Kaloor-Kathrukkadavu Road  has become one of the major roads in th city owing to the traffic which is diverted from Kaloor to NH because of the ongoing Metro rail construction. Even long distance buses are being re-routed through these road during night, which is why there is an impending demand to repair the road.

De-clogging works

Meanwhile, in some of the divisions under the Corporation , the de-clogging works of canals are yet to be carried out. Bigger canals like Perandoor are also clogged with waste and filth in areas like Kaloor, near the PVS Hospital.
