KOCHI: If you want to get a glimpse of the famous Bihar silks or Chikan embroidery from Madhya Pradesh, then ‘Cottonfab-2017’ is the best place to be.

Be it for an occasion, festival or casual wear, cotton and silk fabrics are preferred by all women. The Sambhalpuri Ikkat cotton and silk handwoven in a fantastic array of weaves with temple border, the traditional Chanderi cotton that is mercerised (done after the weaving fabric) and silk in light weight and zari floral have been displayed in the on-going ‘Cottonfab-2017’ exhibition at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kaloor.

Bright colours of Gujarat Ajarak print, which are done using natural colours like rust iron and vegetable colours, add to the beauty of the fabrics. “The exhibition-cum-sale is conducted every year. Cotton and silk varieties from different states have been displayed here,” said Raju, the promoter. Bengal kantha work and silk multi-yarn embroidered fabrics are also a part of the display.

The traditional hand-woven cotton and silk varieties from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir, Haryana and Punjab have also been displayed at the exhibition. The fabric from Assam has beautiful batik prints with contemporary designs, colours and weaves which make them popular among all age groups.

The exhibition-cum-sale of handloom cotton and silk products is also an initiative to promote the artisans and the weavers of the country. This show is being held with the intention of popularising the intricate, hand-woven and authentic weaves. The exhibition-cum-sale will continue till July 24.
