Guards up, fashionistas  summer is here!

Designers from the city talk about how to step out in style this summer

KOCHI: Be it a walk down the sun-lit lanes or panting your way to the workplace, summer time makes for an easy occasion to trip on your own sartorial sense and nosedive straight into a faux pas.

It’s all the more important to dress sensibly and look for comfortable clothing. Well, worry not!

There are umpteen boutiques and stores in the city with suggestions and tips while bearing the scorching

heat in mind.

Reshma Binu, who co-owns the boutiques- Mannath and Label’M with her sister-in-law, Anu Tinu, said that their upcoming summer line would definitely satiate the wardrobe of the working woman, and they’ve also stacked up on the latest summer trends.

“We’re into stripes, dots and checks this season as opposed to the floral motifs that were doing the rounds last summer,” said Reshma.

Getting into the details about fabric, she added that they would be using handloom cotton, Mangalgiri and Maheswari cotton and linen to build their line.

“As for the colour palette, we’ll be doing more of whites, beige and yellow to keep it mellow yet sparkly.”

Adding that they will have an eclectic mix of cuts and prints, Reshma said, “We have more of box-pleated top-wear; they don’t have slits on their sides, an attribute that gives them an edge over other kurtas, for they can quickly be converted into dresses as well.”

One has to have a bit of fun too right? “And that’s why we’ve played a lot with ‘doris’ this time around,” said Reshma.

When asked what works best this season, pat comes the reply, ‘cotton’. Reshma explains how the summer season always calls for good indigenous cotton clothing.

“While cotton is the best bet, fabric like linen which is a bit on the expensive side feels heavenly on the skin. It has to be ensured that the skin breathes freely during summer.”

Picking colours this season isn’t as simple as you thing; it’s literally a deal-breaker if you choose the wrong colours. “People tend to pick dark colours for their slimming effect on them, but darker shades soak up the heat way more than lighter shades.

Also, one can switch denims with ankle pants or culottes. Straight pants and cigarette pants can replace the leggings which would be too hot to handle this summer owing to the lycra mix in them.”
