KOCHI: ‘Jalam Jeevamrutham,’ a project conceived and initiated by the students of Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara, to purify water will be launched on Friday. Hibi Eden MLA will inaugurate the function at Perandoor Canal walkway at 9.30 am.

The project, a part of the school’s social outreach service, involves treatment of water using vetiver grass, floating rafts made with PVC pipes and coir strings on which vetiver grass has been cultivated. This will be deposited in Perandoor Canal, in a move to clean up the highly-contaminated canal.
This works under the principle of ‘phytoremediation,’ wherein plants are used to clean up or remediate contaminated sites. “The main advantage of the project is that it can be implemented even in remote areas,” a release said.
