Sporting a smile, these cops in Ernakulam's Munambam help youths get government jobs

Officers expect the move will eventually help bring down the use of drug abuse and crime in the station’s jurisdiction.

KOCHI: Maintaining law and order has always been their primary task, yet when Janamaithri was launched, the policemen were asked to a sport a smile on their faces and maintain a caring tone in voice while discharging their duty. And buoyed by the success of various initiatives in the people-friendly programme, the Munambam Station is taking the police-public co-operation to a new level by organising a scheme to equip the unemployed youth grab government jobs. The officers expect the move will eventually help spread a sense of security and, in turn, bring down the use of drug abuse and crime in the station’s jurisdiction.

According to the officers in charge, the response from qualified youth for the novel initiative has been overwhelming. As a first step, the Munambam Police, which falls under the Ernakulam Rural wing, conducted an orientation class on how to prepare for the Kerala Public Service Commission examinations, with experts from various fields imparting training to the youth at the Goureeshwaram Auditorium at Cherai on October 14.

“What we aim at is a better police-youth cooperation by motivatin

g the qualified aspirants to grab government jobs and thereby keeping them away from drugs and liquor,” said Munambam Sub-Inspector T V Shibu, who conceived the programme along with SI G Arun. “The training,  given by writers, academicians and other experts, is free of cost. The service of motivational speaker  Jayesh will also be made available.”

Youth, in the 18-32 age category and residing in the Munambam station’s jurisdiction, can join the programme. Classes for lower division clerk, last grade servant, civil police officer and other posts for which SSLC to Bachelors degree form the eligibility, are being conducted.

“Eighty five youth attended the orientation classes we organised at Kuzhippilly and Pallippuram grama panchayats. The mode of selection, interview and other details were explained to the attendees and a mock test was also conducted,” said Josy, an Assistant Sub-Inspector at the Munambam Station and an organiser of the programme.“We’re planning to organise more orientation classes. We’re also aiming to have a permanent coaching centre,” said Josy.
