Water sports buffs can now have a splash at Kerala's Njarakkal fish farm

The water cycling and kayaking facilities will be thrown open to the public on Saturday, with Matsyafed chairman P P Chitharanjan scheduled to perform the inauguration of the kayaking rafts. 

KOCHI: The Matsyafed-run Njarakkal fish farm popular with domestic tourists frequenting the state’s business capital for the exclusive visual-gastronomic feast combo is aiming to take its USP to the next level - it will boast of  water cycling facilities, the first in the state, aimed at drawing water sports enthusiasts.

The water cycling and kayaking facilities will be thrown open to the public on Saturday, with Matsyafed chairman P P Chitharanjan scheduled to perform the inauguration of the kayaking rafts and the water cycle at the function to be held at the fish farm, according to a communique. However, it is mandatory for those taking part in water sports to don life jackets.A life guard has also been appointed to ensure the safety of the visitors.

Similar to the bicycle, the water cycle will be 12-feet long, six-feet wide and four-feet high. The hull of the cycle is made of fibre and steel. The propellers are fitted on both sides which will enable easy balancing of the cycle. The seat position can be adjusted as per the height of the cyclist. To prevent rain and blistering sun, the water cycle has a custom-built top to shield the rider from the elements.The water cycle is a joint initiative of ship mechanic and Udayamperoor native Vency Antony and Matsyafed.

While the CMFRI provided the safety certificate to the water cycle naval architect M V Baiju provided technical support for the venture.The tourists can get themselves a  water cycle ride by paying `200 for a 30-minute ride. In view of the Vishu festival, the 30-minute ride will be offered for a concessional `100 in the initial days. Kayaking raft will be available at `150 for 30-minute duration.

Matsyafed said in its press release that people would be permitted to use water sports facilities only after wearing life jackets. Matsyfed also has appointed a lifeguard for safety purpose.
