Ayurveda for mind and body wellness

KOCHI: Ayurveda believes that during the Malayalam month of Karkidakam which coincides with our monsoon season, the human body is generally weak and prone to illness. During this period, the human body accumulates a high amount of toxins due to aggravated Doshas and is in critical need of detoxification.

Therefore, this period has long been identified as ideal for preventive treatment and rejuvenation therapy. In addition, this is also the optimum time when the body is most receptive to Ayurveda  medicines.Individuals who undergo the seasonal Karksaka Chikalsa can consistently maintain their body and mind at the peak performance level.

Karkidaka treatment

This is part of the Shodhanachikitsa therapy of Ayurveda science of medicine, which entails comprehensive de-toxification.The five methods to detoxify , that is, vamanam (medicated emesis), virechanam (purgation), vasti (enema), nasyam (nasal instillation) and raktamokshanam (blood
letting/cleansing) are collectively known as Panchakarmmam.

This method of treatment specifically targets disease-causing elements of the human body and restores the body to equilibrium and health. It is very important to follow certain rules while undertaking Karkidaka treatment.

1. Water-borne diseases are most rampant during this phase. One should drink around 2 litres of boiled, lukewarm water every day.

2. Diet should consist of liquid or easy to digest vegan / vegetarian diet. Non-vegetarian food should be avoided.

3. One should have good sleep during the night, and avoid sleeping during the day.

4. Moderation is essential. One should exercise moderation in everything, from food to thought. The body and mind should be at peace while the treatment is on.

Karkidaka kanji

Karkidaka kanji also known as ‘Oushadha kanji’, is taken during this period as part of the therapy. It is a potent medicinal porridge made of around 20 special herbs. It has a profound effect in keeping monsoon fevers at bay. Among its chief ingredients is a mixture of about nine pulses and cereals which are especially beneficial for preventing rheumatic disorders, the occurrence of which peaks during the monsoon.

The kanjiis ideal for boosting immunity and the body’s strength and also acts as a very powerful detoxifying agent. Karkidaka kanji can be prepared at home. For the convenience of patients, there are ready-to-cook kits with detailed instructions available at leading Ayurveda centres or shops. A single Karkidaka kanji kit usually lasts for almost a week. It should be consumed daily for a minimum period of a week for optimal results.

The four benefits

1. Increased immunity and resistance to illness
2. Increased energy and vitality
3. Increased focus and mental ability
4. A balanced tri-dosha helps in addressing problems presented by various lifestyle diseases such as obesity and diabetes.

Today, Ayurveda is also today promoting a digital detox during the Karkidaka program to free patients from their addiction to modern technological devices. Clients are encouraged to meditate, do yoga and go for walks among nature. This weeks long regimen dramatically brings down instances of depression and promotes a sense of emotional well being.
