KOCHI: Chellanam, the district’s coastal belt which bore the brunt of heavy rain, can soon heave a sigh of relief as the district administration has drawn up an emergency plan to restore normalcy to the people there.
Removing the accumulated mud and sand from residential premises, clearing of garbage and putting up geo bags and stone bricks to bolster the defence against the lashing waves are the major initiatives planned by the district administration. “ The panchayat authorities have cited technical difficulties in removing the sand and mud from the residential premises.
To resolve the issue, a committee headed by the Major Irrigation Executive Engineer will decide the time period and quantity of mud which has to be removed from the area. Then it will be the Chellanam panchayat’s responsibility to remove mud from the canal,” said District Collector K Mohammed Y Safeerulla.
The Collector also said the clean up has got under way with the support of ASHA workers, NSS workers, Anbodu Kochi team and other NGOs.
“A mass cleaning drive will be held on Saturday and Sunday. The Sub-Collector has been asked to prepare a detailed plan for the cleaning drive,” said Safeerulla.
He also said bleaching power will be sprinkled on the premises to prevent the outbreak of epidemics. “The relief camps opened in these areas will be closed down with the families going back to their homes,” the collector added.
