KOCHI:District Collector K Muhammed Y Safirulla on Wednesday visited Chellanam area, the worst affected by sea incursion following heavy rain for last few weeks. Safirulla visited Muravukkad, Bazar and Velamkanni areas where Irrigation Department is constructing temporary sea walls to prevent sea incursion.

Due to heavy rain, two lives were lost which forced the public to organise a mass protest in the area. Following this, the district administration allocated Rs 8 crore to construct temporary walls using geo-tubes. The local residents claimed that government had promised to complete the sea-wall construction work before the monsoon.

However, even after the fund was allocated, no construction work was carried out. The residents alleged that for temporary stoppage of sea water, at least 1000 geo-tubes are required but only 250 geo-tubes have been laid till now. Similarly, the dredging has to be conducted at smaller canals for the flow of seawater. The dredging work was carried out only at Bazar and Companypaddi areas.
