Rain fury: Over 3,000 shifted to relief camps in Ernakulam dist

A majority of the camps are opened in the coastal region of the district which has witnessed severe sea incursion for the past two days.

KOCHI: Following heavy rain and flooding, 3,254 persons were shifted to temporary rehabilitation camps in Ernakulam district on Monday. As many as 31 camps were set up on Monday.

The data from the District Administration claimed 970 families have been shifted to rehabilitation camps. Directions have been given to tahsildars to provide facilities, including medical aids to people who have been shifted to rehabilitation camps.

A majority of the camps are opened in the coastal region of the district which has witnessed severe sea incursion for the past two days. In Kochi taluk, 559 families, comprising 2,075 persons, were shifted to six camps on Monday. As many as 229 families are shifted to Chellanam Leo English Medium School. At St Mary's Higher Secondary School Chellanam, temporary arrangements are made for the stay of 189 families. Other camps are functioning at Panyapilly Government Higher Secondary School, Elamkunnapuzha St Peter's LP School, Palluruthy Corporation Town Hall and Puthuvype Government UP School.

At Muvattupuzha taluk, 59 families comprising 169 persons were shifted to temporary shelters. Rehabilitation camps are functioning at Piravom, South Marady and Kakoor.In Kothamangalam taluk, 43 families comprising 142 persons are shifted to temporary camps. Camps are also operational at Thrikariyoor and Kothamanganal town. In Kanayanoor taluk, 115 families comprising 286 persons were rehabilitated.

In Aluva taluk, 35 families comprising 131 persons were shifted to St Joseph's Girls High School at Chengal.At Paravoor taluk, 174 families comprising 512 people were moved to temporary shelters which are operational at Alamgad, Puthenvelikara, Eloor, Kunnammavu, Kaitharam, Kuttikatukara, Manakappady, Vayalkara.

MLA's call to rouse Revenue Dept from deep slumber

The Revenue Department should be roused from its slumber and it should take immediate steps to resolve the issues confronting the public on account of the incessant rains, Hibi Eden MLA said here on Monday. The MLA alleged  the Revenue Department is yet to take constructive steps to address the grievances of the public. "Till now, the Revenue authorities are yet to go on a fact-finding mission to assess the extent of the damage. We have already requested the Revenue Minister to initiate remedial measures at the earliest," he said.
