Water Metro promises better connectivity

KOCHI: Among the major projects projected to solve the travel woes of Vypeen islanders to an extent is the Rs 747-crore Water Metro slated to be rolled out in 2019. Along with the introduction of   76 advanced vessels, the project also includes the revamping and remodelling of 41 boat jetties in the Greater Kochi area.

Along with Vypeen, other places where boat jetties will be reconstructed are Bolghatty, High Court, Koronkotta, Thanthonnithuruthu, Mulavukadu Hospital, Mulavukadu Panchayat, Mulavukadu North, Ponnarimangalam, Chittoor South, Thevara, Ernakulam, Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Kumbalam, Eroor, Nettoor, Vyttila and Kakkanad.

Modernised boats will ply on the routes of Ernakulam-Vypeen, Edakochi-Vypeen, Ernakulam-Mattancherry, High Court-Mulavukadu, Vyttila-Infopark, Kumbalam-Thevara, Infopark-Edakochi, Mulavukadu-South Chittoor, South Chittoor-Cheranalloor, Elamkunnappuzha-High Court, Kadamakudy-Paliyamthuruth, Chennoor-Thundathumkadavu, Chariyamthuruthu-Chennoor, South Chittoor-Ernakulam, Edakochi-Thevara and Kothad-Amrita Hospital.

“With the commissioning of the Water Metro, the islanders secluded from the mainland will get better connectivity with the city centre. They will get an opportunity to reach various places in the Kochi agglomeration area with the help of a single ticket using various modes of transport,” an officer said.
