Garbage dumping in public: Police register 864 cases, seize 109 vehicles in Kochi

90 per cent rise in cases,  522 cases were registered in the city in the last month alone

KOCHI:  With the police taking stricter action against individuals who litter in public places, the number of registered cases has seen a significant increase of 90 per cent.   As of now, a total of 864 cases have been registered this year in various police stations under the City Police Commissionerate, while 48 cases were registered in stations under the jurisdiction of the rural Superintendent of Police (SP).

Police also seized 100 vehicles in urban areas and nine vehicles in rural areas in  connection with littering. According to the police, 522 cases were  registered in the city in the last month alone following strict surveillance. “As many as 214 cases have been  registered so far this month.

The number of cases was eight on  January, 19 in February, and 101 in March. The highest number of cases since January has been registered  by the Harbour Police numbering 110. The highest number of  vehicles seized was 39. The Central Police station has registered 91 cases and four vehicles were seized. 74  people have been charged by the South Police Station for  dumping garbage. The North Police Station has registered 64 cases while the Hill Palace Police Station has  booked 63,” said a police statement.

The 42 vehicles that were seized in the city area were handed over to the court as part of further proceedings. According to the  police statement, in the rural areas  of the district, the highest number of cases were registered in the stations of Aluva sub-division - 21.

“Two cases were  registered in Munambam, Perumbavoor had 18  cases, Muvatupuzha with 5 cases, and in Puthencruz two cases registered. Three tanker lorries, one Taurus lorry, two pick-up  vans, two auto-rickshaws, and one bike  were seized in connection with littering,” said the police statement.
