Astrologer held for selling elephant pearl online

An astrologer was arrested for allegedly selling elephant pearl on a website claiming it can change the fate of a person from misery to happiness, a West Bengal forest department official said.

KOLKATA: An astrologer was arrested for allegedly selling elephant pearl on a website claiming it can change the fate of a person from misery to happiness, a West Bengal forest department official said.

"He was arrested for selling Gazmukta or pearl made of elephant skull bone through a website claiming that it can change the fate of a person from misery to happiness," said Pradeep Vyas, the Chief wildlife warden and principal conservator of forests, Bengal, on Friday.

The arrest was made late on Thursday.

Elephant pearls are believed to form when concentric sheets of dentine (the main supporting structure of the tooth) get deposited around a foreign body that enters the pulp cavity of the elephant tusk.

The Indian elephant is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972.
